The Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB), in the time and frequency laboratory (often called uurbureel) is looking for a student (internship/thesis) to develop a concept and make an affordable product with dedicated electronics (FPGA, PCB circuits, PLL).

The ROB is maintaining the Belgian realization of the international time scale UTC (Universal Time Coordinated), named UTC(ORB). This last years, our time and frequency laboratory was implied in the Demetra project. This project has received funding from the European GNSS Agency (GSA) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program. One of the mission of the GSA is to promotes the commercial applications of the European positioning systems (like Galileo) and to prepare the market for the take-up of Galileo.

The goal of the service 6 is to allow any user to have a precise (at some nanosecond) synchronization of a low cost
oscillator on the UTC(ORB) in real time. The main developments and results have been achieved but implying high cost, too high performance and without specific electronics. To be brief, once we have proved that it is working, we want now to make a realistic prototype. This ongoing work will be done in collaboration with INRIM (the metrological institute in Italy) and the GSA.

We are now looking for a student (stage or ideally een masterproef, but an thesis should be also possible) to develop the concept and make an affordable product with dedicated electronics (FPGA, PCB circuits, PLL...)
