You will carry out experiments to capture and process the sensor signals of a moving robot. You will participate in the research of accurate indoor localization.

Contribute in the development of tracking and navigation systems for autonomous robots and vehicles

In a high-tech research project, developing new technologies for companies in the automotive and machine building sector, you will work in a research team and carry out localization experiments with robots. You will calculate the robot’s position, while carrying out various trajectories at various conditions.

The experiment
Using an ultra-wide-band (UWB) localization system, you will capture the relative ranges between anchors, fixed on the walls, and tags on the moving robot, based on time difference of arrival of the EM signals. From these ranges and the anchor positions, the robot position can be calculated.
The UWB system is augmented with an inertial measurement unit to capture the relative motions of the robot, with which the UWB localization is improved. These experiments need to mimic situations that challenge the application of UWB localization (no direct line of sight, multiple reflections on metallic surfaces, EMI, ...).

The experiments consist of (i) a preparation of the situations (positioning of anchors and disturbances, outline of the robot trajectories), (ii) the actual measurements while driving the robot, (iii) document and automate procedures, (iv) signal processing and analysis of the data (optional). To evaluate the UWB localization accuracy, a “ground truth” localization is captured by cameras fixed on the ceiling that register a pattern on the robot.

    Required special knowledge:

    Hands-on master student Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

    You are
    - Master student in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical);
    - With a broad knowledge in different engineering disciplines (a.o. electromagnetism, mechanics, electronics, optimization, software and/or system engineering, optionally image processing). The optional task (iv) can be carried out if the student has the proper skills (signal processing).
    - Experience with Matlab and Python and Linux are a must.
    - Passionate by research and new technologies with focus on applications for machines or mechatronic systems of the companies;
    - Result oriented, responsible and proactive;
    - A good communicator, able to communicate in English;
    - Eager to learn and a team player.
