Atlas Copco Airpower NV.
Atlas Copco in Wilrijk (Antwerp) had its origins in the Antwerp compressor manufacturer Arpic engineering, which was taken over by the Swedish company Atlas Diesel in 1956. As the name Atlas Diesel was no longer relevant, a new name was sought that would reflect the company's activities and unite its foreign subsidiaries. Atlas Copco was chosen, derived from the name of a Belgian subsidiary - Compagnie Pneumatique Commerciale.
In the next two years the production and development of all compressors was transferred from Sweden to Wilrijk (Antwerp). Atlas Copco Airpower was created during the international divisionalization in 1968.
The recognition of its innovative compressor technologies, the skills of its employees and its central location in Europe soon made Belgium the backbone of the Group's compressor business. Over the years, the activities in Belgium have evolved and grown. Today, Atlas Copco Airpower is the world's largest, most advanced production site for both mobile and stationary compressors and the knowledge centre for compressed air and air treatment technology.
